Spring 2022 CES Newsletter

Registration Open - Christian Engineering Conference (June 29 - July 1, 2022)

We are excited for the return of in-person conference experiences and look forward to seeing everyone at the 2022 Christian Engineering Conference to be hosted at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul immediately following the ASEE Convention.  This is a great opportunity to network and idea share with other Christian Engineering professionals.  For those who have attended the conference in the past, you will see many familiar elements in the program.  Please share the above flyer with your networks and encourage others to join us! Click here for registration, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

A New Book from Our Colleagues

Congratulations to our colleagues, Ethan Brue, Derek Schuurman, and Steven Vanderleest! This book is now available to purchase. Here is an introduction from the publisher's site.

Our technology shapes the way we live, interact, work, play, and even worship. Technology and its power are both old and new—as is the wisdom we need to envision, design, build, and use it well. For Christians passionate about developing technology, it's not always clear how their faith and work intersect. How can designing and using technology actually be a way of loving God and our neighbors?

Veteran engineers and teachers Ethan Brue, Derek Schuurman, and Steve VanderLeest provide a field guide for fellow explorers working with technology. Using numerous case studies, historical examples, and personal stories, they explore issues such as:

Along the way they acknowledge the challenges arising from technology but also point to the wonderful possibilities it offers us and its ability to contribute to the common good.

For Christians studying and working in engineering, computer science, technical design, architecture, and related fields, this book is packed with wisdom and practical guidance. By sharing what they have learned, the authors encourage readers to ask harder questions, aspire to more noble purposes, and live a life consistent with their faith as they engage with technology.

Newsletter Sign Up and Article Contributions

This newsletter is a publication of the Christian Engineering Society, distributed no more than once per month. You can sign up to receive an email notification when a new newsletter is available. Ted Song of John Brown University is the moderator and editor of the newsletter. If you have questions about the newsletter, send an email to Ted at tsong@jbu.edu. Additionally, if there is a project or activity at your institution/organization that relates engineering with faith, missions and/or service, we’d like to include it in a future CES newsletter. Society members are always encouraged to submit announcements and contribute articles! (Editor reserves the right to make the final decision on inclusion of all content.) CES also welcomes members to contribute articles or suggest new books to be added to this growing body of literature. If you are interested, please contact the CES resource curator Dr. David Che at ched2@asme.org.
